With the release of a new app simply named ‘Office’, Microsoft appears to be changing that. The offering has appeared on Insider builds, and it ties everything together nicely. Office is basically a hub for the suite, letting users access its various apps and displaying recent documents, @mentions, and comments. According to Microsoft, this app is based on the redesigned Office.com, which also means the shiny new icons. The app also lets you pin documents for later reference and quickly search for documents, people, and sites....

Of course, that makes plenty of sense considering the Xbox 360 was released in 2007 and replaced by the Xbox One in 2013. Microsoft is already to release the Xbox Scarlett next year. This will put two generations between the Xbox 360. Still, the company is continuing to support the console in terms of security and stabilization updates. As we saw in August, this latest release is focused on squashing bugs....

Disk Cleanup has been part of the Windows makeup since Windows 7. It is especially important for removing older Windows builds after an update. These previous versions take up Gigabytes of free space, so having a tool to automatically remove files is important. Despite its ability, the truth is a third-party solution would also be more dynamic and powerful than Disk Cleanup. In its goal to modernize Windows adjustments through the Settings app, Microsoft is going to eventually kill off Disk Cleanup....

View’s main product is Dynamic Glass, which adjusts the tint to let in different amounts of light. The idea is to replace the need for blinds and find a middle ground between nice views and healthy levels of natural light. According to Microsoft, a recent study has found a 50% reduction in eye strain, headaches, and drowsiness. The company will now use Azure IoT in smart buildings for window and floor controller devices....

By snapping up the two game-developers, Microsoft is furthering its push to bolster its own gaming studios. The company has repeatedly said the Xbox brand will rely on exclusive titles to differentiate in the future. As for Obsidian Entertainment and inXile Entertainment, Microsoft’s involvement is a well-timed intervention. Obsidian is a noted role-playing game (RPG) developer that has created games such as Fallout: New Vegas and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2....

In terms of which services are receiving patches this month, 20 bugs in Microsoft Edge were fixed, while 121 vulnerabilities were found across Windows Azure, Office, Exchange Server, Visual Studio, and .NET Core. According to bug hunting group The Zero Day Initiative, the number of patches is higher than normal and significantly more than usual August Patch Tuesday rollouts. “It’s almost triple the size of last year’s August release, and it’s the second largest release this year,” the group points out....

Microsoft explains the two vulnerabilities exposed the same vulnerability. Both zero-days allowed attackers to elevate privileges on Win32k, a major part of the running operation of the Windows OS. The company lists the flaws as CVE-2019-0803 and CVE-2019-0859. Microsoft names the vulnerabilities as the same, even though they were both found independently by Kaspersky Lab and Alibaba Cloud Intelligence. Win32k was found to be failing to handle memory properly. An attacker exploiting this flaw could run arbitrary code in the kernel and gain system rights....

“In some embodiments according to the present disclosure, producing the background story behind user-created content can be facilitated by gathering and collecting suggestions for the background story at various points in time during the creation of the content[…]The suggestions can be gathered at points in time based on a recorded history of the process of producing the user-created content.” One example this could come in useful is when sharing a video or pictures of a trip to social media....

Certainly, Xiaoice has been one of Microsoft’s most enduring chatbots. Because it is excellent at injecting emotion into conversations, it has become a popular tool. In fact, it’s no longer confined to China and has been released in Japan (as Rinna) and in Indonesia. Microsoft says spinning Xiaoice off into its own company will help it to continue growing. Specifically, the focus will be on creating a “commercial ecosystem” that pushes innovation....

If this is the case, it means Microsoft will continue with having two Xbox consoles. Currently, the company offers the Xbox One S and the Xbox One X. The latter is just a year old and is the most powerful console in the world. Microsoft may want to continue this model, with Project Scarlett functioning as a replacement to the Xbox One S and Project Anaconda replacing the Xbox One X....

Comments on Reddit show that users are finding Windows 10 privacy settings are keeping the keylogging feature turned on by default. The feature that tracks typing and handwriting information is always on. Microsoft says this service helps users improve their typing and handwriting. Ok, it is definitely worth mentioning that this is not a keylogger in a traditional sense. However, it is tracking what users type. Also, it is not a new feature as part of the new privacy settings....

To access the APIs, developers can simply add the NuGet to their project via the NuGet Package Manager console. They can then choose to target contracts for Windows 10 1803, 1809, and 1903. Microsoft has provided an example of a project using the NuGet packages on GitHub. It will function on both Windows 10 and Windows 11 and brings Windows to Microsoft Cloud. Windows Virtual Desktop is one of the services that has put Microsoft in a good position in recent weeks. It is built on the premise of remote use and Microsoft has introduced new features to the service this week. Microsoft 365 users now have more management tools for virtual desktops, while security, compliance, and deployment tools have been added. Furthermore, Microsoft Teams is now more functional within Windows Virtual Desktop....

Though the date for Ignite, November 4, was already known, Microsoft Build was less certain. The tech giant tends to run it in May, but the dates aren’t stable. It seems it’ll be late May 19 launch this time, compared to the early month starts of the past couple of years. Build is, of course, Microsoft’s developer conference. As with Google’s I/O and Apple’s WWDC, though, it’s become much more than that....

In a support page, Microsoft confirmed what many suspected; UserVoice forums are disappearing for good. In recent years, the company has given and taken in equal measure when it comes to the forums. During 2018, the company debuted a Skype UserVoice forum to allow users to make feature requests. On the flip side, a year later in 2019 the company shut down the Windows Developer forum. That shuttering was a precursor for this latest cull and now decision to entirely remove UserVoice....

Of course, captcha’s are common and a base level of security for weeding out bots during a sign-up process. That Skype has one if hardly a surprise. What is surprising is just how annoying this captcha is. Again, annoying captcha’s are par for the course, but Microsoft is really taking it to the extreme. It seems new users coming to Skype must complete the captcha puzzle 10 times before being allowed to progress....

Microsoft is now addressing this with the rollout of wish lists and an improved shopping cart experience. The new cart is available now for Xbox Insiders, while wish lists will launch later in the week. As with other retail platforms, the wish list will act as a hub for items you have your eye on. Users will be able to quickly see when items are on sale and share the lists with friends....
